Dr. McNally's Story

Picture
"It was after a two-week winter break, where I took a 2-credit preceptorship in Minocqua, Wisconsin while attending the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point that the direction in my career choice would change.  I was already working toward a pre-med degree when I had the opportunity to follow the different specialties in the medical profession.  From that experience, I realized how limited a general practicing medical doctor was in caring for their patients and this persuaded me to look more closely into the practice of Chiropractic.  After graduation from UW Stevens Point in 1996 with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry, I married my high school sweetheart, Therese, and we relocated to Davenport, IA in order for me to attend Palmer College of Chiropractic.
"While attending Palmer, I found that Therese suffered from low back pain and frequent migraines.  Determined to help my wife, I attended the motion palpation club held on campus adding an extra 7 hours a week to my schedule for the first 8 months in addition to all the required classes to be taken every trimester.  When I started teaching it, I expanded the time available to 12 hours a week.  I attended the weekend seminars on how to adjust the spine through various techniques, including going through Applied Kinesiology (AK) for 2 years.  I tried all the techniques to help Therese with her back pain and migraines, but I was unable to stop the frequency of the migraines.  We even had her treated by doctors in the field who taught at Palmer and saw patients in private practice however, there were still no results.
"An approach that could quite possibly help Therese was introduced to me eight months prior to graduation.  I went and heard Dr. Ray Marshall speak at Palmer about the NUCCA technique which he practiced in Tulsa, OK.  The way he explained what the technique accomplished, I had a vivid understanding that this may be the answer as to how to remedy my wife’s back pain and migraines.  Over the next eight months, I traveled to Tulsa four times to shadow Dr. Ray in his practice.  After that fourth visit, I had a very good understanding of the parameters surrounding this technique.
"Upon graduation in 2000 from Palmer and in an attempt to establish my practice, I visited different chiropractors in private practice who were located in Wisconsin between Adams to Mauston and Tomah.  Dr. Eastvold, who had offices in Norwalk and in Tomah at the time, decided I was a good fit for his Tomah practice and was willing to purchase the necessary x-ray equipment and x-ray frame so I could begin practicing the NUCCA technique.
"After six months of waiting to receive the ordered equipment from Canada, I was now ready to treat my very first patient with the NUCCA technique.  And that person would be my wife, Therese.   I had no formal training in the technique but had some copies of what the x-rays should look like and pages of an explanation on how to analyze the x-rays.  It took a very long time to complete the technique. Four post x-rays and adjusting her 4 different times over the course of 10 hours, she was finally free of migraines.  From that moment on, I have been passionate about helping those who suffer from migraines.
"As a Catholic, I felt it was necessary to pray every day for God’s guidance in my understanding and further practice of the NUCCA technique.  I have continued that habit of prayer even until today.  I feel it was His guidance that has brought me to have an incredible understanding of the human frame and the corrective process of the NUCCA technique.
"Overtime, my practice flourished, and I was later challenged with another dilemma.  The office space I currently occupied would not be enough. I was faced with a decision to either reduce the number of new patients who sought care or plan on building an office space that could meet the present and future demands of the practice.  This endeavor would include the need to add extra doctors into the practice.  During this time of discernment and planning, I was receiving further training through the 3-year Diplomat Program learning in depth the physiology and neurology of the upper cervical region and its effect on the brain.  I felt God was calling me to teach what I know and share it with other chiropractors interested in practicing the NUCCA technique. Providentially, I have never sought out doctors but through word of mouth, they have come to me and requested of my help.  Therefore in 2014, McNally Spinal Care moved into its current location on Berry Avenue in Tomah, Wisconsin.  The success of this new office complex as well as the addition of NUCCA doctors came at a great cost of personal time with my family. This is the one and only regret I have in my career.
"I am passionate about the NUCCA technique and love what I do. Helping patients recover their health and lead normal lives is an amazing accomplishment. Likewise, I eagerly anticipate what I will learn next in this scope of practice, so I can help even more doctors using this technique become successful in this specialty of healthcare." - Dr. Matthew McNally DC, DCCJP
